Astroparticle Physics is
a relatively young area of research, whose aim it is to
understand astrophysical phenomena with the help of their
particlephysical background.
Particles, for example, get accelerated at shock fronts
of
Supernova
remnants to such high energies that they are still
observable at earth as
Cosmic Rays.
Beneath other observsations, also the spectrum of these cosmic
particles show anomalies, which seem to be explainable only by
unconventional interpretations. Today we believe, that the
observable universe is heavily influenced by a omnipresent
background of
Dark Matter.
These and other questions are being investigated at the chair
of Astroparticle Physics at Potsdam University.
